On Wednesday, Israel assassinated Ismail Haniyeh, Hamas’s political leader and chief negotiator for ending the Gaza War. Since the strike was on Iranian territory, in Tehran, it will likely elicit a direct attack on Israel by Iran, probably one that’s more intense than the strategically measured rocket barrage Iran sent to Israel in retaliation for bombing the Iranian embassy in Damascus. Bibi’s intentions should be loud and clear, but Biden, Blinken, and Sullivan can’t seem to figure them out. He will do whatever it takes to stay in power, even if it means killing tens of thousands of civilians and provoking a war between Iran and America, two nuclear powers.
By killing Hamas’s chief negotiator, Israel has all but guaranteed that negotiations will not continue. And though Biden claims he is pushing Israel to the negotiating table, he has used no leverage to actually coerce Bibi into conceding anything. Israel’s conflicts with Hamas, Hezbollah, and Iran are only possible with the billions of dollars America sends to the IDF every year. Biden could simply call Bibi on the phone and tell him that he will cut off aid if Israel doesn’t negotiate a ceasefire right away—but he has to mean it. It’s possible Biden has already tried this and Bibi has called his bluff. Every time Israel does something absurdly provocative and unreasonable, the US backs Israel up by pledging undying support to the state.
By giving Bibi a standing ovation in the once-sacred halls of congress while the rest of the world pursues him for an arrest warrant by the International Criminal Court, we effectively grant him carte blanche in his various wars. By embracing the guy who has devoted his political career to demolishing the two state solution, we make all our platitudes about peace in the Middle East look really stupid. By bombing the Houthis in response to their attacks on global shipping—which are in response to Israel’s war on Gaza—we show Bibi that we’ll fight his wars for him. By promising to send more troops to the Middle East to protect Israel from an all-too-predictable retaliatory strike by Iran, we give Bibi the means to continue his belligerence.
Why are we so zealously committed to defending this lunatic and his rogue state?Israel is practically waging a war on the United Nations and its charter, and we are bankrolling it. Remember: for over half a century, Israel has ruled over millions of people who lack basic human rights such as suffrage. It is the only country in the world that opposes establishing a nuclear free zone in the Middle East. Even Iran supports such a nuclear disarmament treaty. Is it really in America’s interest to protect this state that has garnered the hatred of so many?
In his eternal crusade against peace and against democracy, Bibi is embodying the Nietzschean worldview of fascists like Mussolini:
The weak crumble, are slaughtered and are erased from history while the strong, for good or for ill, survive. The strong are respected, and alliances are made with the strong, and in the end peace is made with the strong.
Actually, that’s not a Mussolini quote. That’s something Bibi’s twitter account posted in 2018.
