I’m bad at doing crosswords. I can do the NYT’s Mondays and Tuesday, though Wednesday gets hard. Sometimes I’ll do the whole Sunday puzzle, but it’s no harder than a Wednesday puzzle. I’m not patient enough to practice daily or slog my way through slow puzzles. And I’m not smart or stubborn enough to solve cryptic puzzles, like the ones Harper’s publishes. But solving a really difficult clue or figuring out a clever theme is super gratifying, and writing your own crosswords is even more gratifying—and fun!
I’ve been doing this for a while, but my puzzles have a very small audience. I spend hours creating them, and only a couple people will ever solve them. So now I’m putting them on the internet, where they’ll live forever, probably in obscurity.
Here’s one I made a few years ago which you can play online at this link or print. I think it’s about as hard as a Wednesday NYT puzzle.
The first crossword puzzle I ever do will certainly be one created by my favorite cruciverbalist. It will happen before I croak. I'm glad you are adding your puzzles here!
